Writers’ Police Academy

Last week I spent several days at the International Public Safety Training Academy in Wisconsin for the Writers’ Police Academy. Organized by former cop and author Lee Lofland, this was the third time I’ve attended and each year it gets better and better. Where else can writers meet a K9 officer and his dog, attend a mock death investigation, cause another car to spin out while in pursuit (hands on!), fire handguns and AR-15s, learn about poisons, ballistics, explosions, arson, PTSD, and how to apply a tourniquet to the stub of a severed limb? Taught by some of the best instructors in the nation, it’s a peek into the real life of law enforcement. Every year I’m impressed by the amount of training that our law enforcement officers experience and the types of split second decisions they face every day on the job.\
